Named Prosane, this packaging solution developed by Proteme is positioned as a natural alternative to post-harvest plant protection products.
At each stage of fruit and vegetable production, solutions are emerging to reduce food waste. Proteme has decided to work with fruit and vegetable producers to intervene after harvests and before they reach the shelves.
Launched in 2021 by Paul Malfoy and Valentin Sabatet, the company has developed an edible coating, called Prosane, which surrounds the product to protect it from external damage. Invisible and removable with a simple rinse of water, this solution aims to replace the plant protection products used after harvest to extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables.
Three years of research and development were required to arrive at a first version of Prosane which, the founders assure, allows for a 10-day increase in the shelf life of a hand of bananas and a 2.5-fold reduction in the amount of mould on citrus fruits without altering either the taste or the appearance.
Since the business started, nearly €600,000 has been raised from private investors and state financial aid amounting to €1 million has been released.
To further its research and prepare for its market entry, Proteme now wants to raise an additional €4 million and hopes to raise between €200,000 and €600,000 via the Sowefund crowdfunding platform, which is open to everyone.
