Called Prosane, this packaging solution developed by Proteme is a natural alternative to post-harvest plant protection products.

At each stage of horticultural production, solutions emerge to reduce food waste. Proteme has decided to collaborate with fruit and vegetable producers to act after the harvest and before the products reach the shelves.

Launched in 2021 by Paul Malfoy and Valentin Sabatet, the company has developed an edible coating, named Prosane, which envelops the product to protect it from external risks. Invisible and removable with a simple wash in water, this solution is intended to replace post-harvest plant protection products used to extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables.

Three years of research and development were needed to arrive at the first version of Prosane, which, according to its founders, can increase the shelf life of a handful of bananas by 10 days and reduce mould on citrus fruits by 2.5 times, without altering their taste or appearance.

Since the company was launched, almost €600,000 has been raised from private investors and €1 million in public funding has been made available.

To advance its research and prepare for market entry, Proteme is now seeking to raise another €4 million, and expects to secure between €200,000 and €600,000 through the Sowefund crowdfunding platform, which is open to everyone.
